Project Description

This project was a grand-scale undertaking that involved dividing it into multiple stages and implementing it across various zones of the property.

One of the areas focused on a large catchment region, characterised by open fields and sloping terrain. The primary objective here was to manage water flow effectively, retaining as much water on the property as possible while establishing a productive food forest.

To achieve this, a well-thought-out design was put in place, consisting of six interconnected Swales. These Swales were strategically designed to slow down and channel the water, creating a cascading effect. Eventually, the water would accumulate in a sizeable pond before finally spilling back into the local creek.

In the Swales, a diverse array of plants were cultivated, including native species, flowers, fruit trees, vegetables, grasses, and shrubs, contributing to increased biodiversity and fostering a healthy ecosystem. Additionally, a dedicated area was set up to support bees, further enhancing the ecological balance.

Another significant aspect of the project involved upgrading the primary driveway to create a more welcoming and safe parking area. This phase involved substantial earthwork to establish an open-space garden. The newly designed garden featured a dry creek bed, providing an aesthetically pleasing and effective drainage solution.

To deal with rainwater runoff from the improved driveway and surrounding areas, a system of new pipes was installed both underneath and alongside the road, effectively managing and directing rainwater to suitable outlets.

Overall, this project successfully combined ecological and functional elements, incorporating sustainable water management practices, biodiversity promotion, and improved infrastructure for the property.
